Young people are seeking out plastic surgeons and booking cosmetic procedures in record numbers.
And as members of Gen Z say, it’s because growing up in the digital age has made some people see themselves through a new lens.
“All the filters distort your face, even if it’s not noticeable, so I think it’s just changed our brains a little bit and the expectation of what we should look like,” said Ava Hickman, 22, from Longwood. “I did a lip flip, which is a little bit of Botox right above the upper lip and it just kind of relaxes that muscle.”
It’s one of many cosmetic procedures that people in her generation are seeking out more than ever. In the past year, 75% of plastic surgeons in the United States have seen a surge in patients under the age of 30. That’s according to the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.
“It actually surprised all of us,” said Dr Theda Kontis, president of the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. “Every once in a while, when a 20-something comes in and asks for Botox, we all kind of wonder what brought them in and what they’re trying to do.”
