In a groundbreaking medical achievement, a Pune-based eye surgeon successfully restored the vision of a 35-year-old woman from Bihar. The innovative procedure involved a combination of implantable lenses and laser eye surgery, marking a significant breakthrough in treating extremely high myopia or near-sightedness.
The patient, Sarita Kumari, had battled severe myopia since childhood, reaching an extraordinary -24 diopters spectacle number. Beyond the treatable refractive error of -20 diopters, her vision was limited to distorted images seen through high-powered glasses. The surgeries, conducted at Pune’s Asian Eye Hospital on November 16 and 22, proved transformative for Kumari.
Expressing her joy, Kumari stated, “Now, I don’t wear spectacles, and my vision is better than before without any distortions.” Ophthalmologist Dr. Sanjay Patil, who performed the rare surgery, highlighted the uniqueness of such cases, noting the rarity of patients with such extreme conditions. Eye surgeon Gaurav Luthra commended the procedure as an innovative use of technology, combining two methods to address previously untreatable levels of eye power.

Concerns Arise After Cataract Surgery Camp in Ahmedabad
In a separate incident, 17 patients at Ramanand Eye Hospital in Ahmedabad reported vision loss after undergoing cataract surgery. Promptly responding to the situation, the state health department initiated an investigation, appointing a nine-member committee to delve into the matter. As a precautionary measure, the hospital has been instructed to halt surgeries. Five severely affected patients have been referred to Ahmedabad Civil Hospital for further treatment. This incident raises concerns about the safety and quality of eye surgeries conducted in the region.
