WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — A groundbreaking vision treatment is set to revolutionize the post-cataract surgery experience, allowing patients to “test drive” various vision options. The artificial light-adjustable lens, recently approved by the FDA, is the first of its kind, enabling implant adjustments after the surgery.
Dr. Jiaxi Ding, an esteemed eye surgeon and founder of Ascend Eye Center in Winston-Salem, explained the significance of this advancement. Unlike traditional cataract surgery, which relies on estimations and predictions of post-surgery vision, the light-adjustable lens introduces a new level of customization.
“Patients often experience a lot of anxiety about what they want from cataract surgery,” stated Dr. Ding. “There are so many different options, and it’s like buying a wedding gown off the rack based on your usual size measurements. When we take measurements and examine the eye ahead of time, it’s simply measurements. Of course, there will be variations. Now, the light-adjustable lens is like the ultimate customized gown.”
This innovative technology allows for tailored vision results after the surgery, offering patients a unique and personalized experience. Currently, only 3.5% of eye surgeons in the U.S. and Canada have access to the light-adjustable lens, highlighting its exclusivity and cutting-edge nature.
The lens has already been successfully used for thousands of patients globally, with the adjustments being noninvasive. This development marks a significant leap forward in enhancing the precision and individualization of cataract surgery outcomes, heralding a new era in vision treatment technology.
