A resilient 70-year-old grandfather from Wiltshire, formerly employed by the Swindon Advertiser, has defied physical challenges to achieve a significant academic milestone. Paul Deal, residing on Bradford Road, Winsley, recently graduated with a Master’s degree in history from the University of Bristol, showcasing his determination and commitment to lifelong learning.
Deal’s educational journey encountered a substantial obstacle when he experienced a severe decline in his eyesight. Afflicted with an infection that left him with approximately 20% vision in his right eye and not much more in his left, he faced the daunting prospect of continuing his studies amid adversity. A former journalist, Deal chose to pursue a Master’s degree in history after leaving school with only four O-Levels.
His dedication to education persisted despite the setback, requiring him to defer his studies for a year and undergo laser eye surgery at Bristol Eye Hospital. Initially noticing his deteriorating eyesight while walking his dog, Deal sought medical attention, leading to a late-night operation to halt the infection’s rapid progress in his right eye.
Determined to complete his Master’s degree, Deal embraced assistive technology to aid his reading, adapting to challenges posed by diminished eyesight. His left eye underwent laser eye surgery, partially restoring his vision. Despite being unable to drive, Deal navigated two trains and a bus to reach the university, displaying extraordinary resilience.
In the face of these challenges, Deal completed a substantial 15,000-word dissertation on Bristol’s Society of Merchant Venturers, solidifying his academic achievement. Reflecting on his journey, he expressed pride in graduating and aspires to inspire other retirees to pursue further education.
Deal’s illustrious career in journalism spanned 40 years, including editorial roles at the Bath Evening Chronicle, the Northamptonshire Evening Telegraph, and the BBC in London. Post-retirement, he served as a communications officer for Wiltshire Police before embarking on his educational journey at the University of Bristol.
His graduation ceremony, attended by his wife Diana and youngest daughter, Rebecca, marked a triumphant culmination of a challenging but rewarding academic pursuit. As Deal emphasized the welcoming atmosphere at prestigious institutions like Bristol, he hopes his story inspires others to consider the possibilities of returning to education later in life. Dr. Amy Edwards, his personal tutor, commended Deal’s engagement and eagerness to learn, highlighting the unexpected challenges he navigated during his History MA studies.
