Ying Ku embarked on a journey from Taiwan to the United States at 18, joining her family in North Carolina after years of waiting. What began as a quest for a green card unfolded into a remarkable tale of perseverance and accomplishment.
After settling in North Carolina, Ku pursued her education at Fayetteville Technical Community College before transferring to N.C. State University, initially aiming for a career in veterinary medicine. However, a transformative mission trip to Jamaica with Dr. Joe Cacioppo and Campbell University students shifted her focus towards medicine.
Impressed by the supportive and welcoming environment at Campbell University’s School of Osteopathic Medicine, Ku decided to pursue her medical education there. She was drawn to the school’s emphasis on mission trips and community health initiatives, reflecting her passion for global health.
During her medical studies, Ku discovered her interest in plastic surgery, influenced by a poignant personal experience. The loss of her mother to breast cancer fueled her desire to specialize in reconstructive surgery, motivated by the belief in the transformative power of plastic surgery to restore confidence and improve lives.
Despite the challenges, Ku excelled in her medical training, demonstrating exceptional dedication and resilience. Her decision to pursue plastic surgery residency, one of the most competitive specialties for osteopathic medical graduates, reflects her unwavering determination.
Dr. Craig Fowler, a mentor and colleague, commends Ku’s remarkable journey, describing her as an inspiration. Ku’s achievements, including prestigious awards and research accolades, attest to her exceptional talent and commitment to excellence.
As Ku prepares to embark on her residency at the Cleveland Clinic, she reflects on her gratitude to Campbell University for providing her with the opportunity to realize her dreams. Her journey serves as a testament to the transformative power of perseverance and the pursuit of excellence against all odds.
