In 2022, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons reported a significant uptick in surgical or minimally invasive procedures performed in the United States, totaling 26.2 million—a notable 19% increase since 2019.
With social media platforms inundated with “before” and “after” images showcasing transformative procedures, NBC Chicago delved into some of the most popular trends, seeking insights from Dr. Amir Dorafshar, a board-certified plastic surgeon based in Chicago.
Among the trendy procedures discussed is the face thread lift, often dubbed the “lunchtime lift,” which utilizes absorbable sutures to tighten the face and neck. However, Dr. Dorafshar expressed reservations about its longevity, stating, “I don’t do threads because I don’t think they last very long.”
Buccal fat pad removal, aimed at emphasizing cheekbones by removing fat from the lower cheek area, also garnered attention. Dr. Dorafshar approaches this procedure cautiously, citing concerns about its potential impact on facial aging over time.
Another prominent procedure, the gluteal fat transfer, colloquially known as the “Brazilian butt lift,” involves liposuction to remove fat from one area, which is then injected into the buttocks. Dr. Dorafshar highlighted the caution among plastic surgeons due to the associated risks, including fatalities linked to fat embolism.
A study identified 25 fatalities attributed to fat embolism related to Brazilian butt lift procedures in South Florida between 2010 and 2022, underscoring the gravity of the risks involved. Michael Baumeister, who lost his wife Lattia to complications from a BBL procedure, emphasized the importance of thorough research and careful consideration of the potential consequences before undergoing elective surgery.
Tanesha Walker’s tragic death following a BBL procedure further highlights the risks associated with medical tourism and procedures performed outside the U.S. Dr. Dorafshar flagged legal protections in Florida that may permit non-board-certified plastic surgeons to perform such procedures, contributing to safety concerns.
In response to safety concerns, Florida lawmakers implemented a plastic surgery law effective from July 2023, imposing limits on the number of surgeries per day and mandating the use of ultrasound during BBL procedures to enhance safety measures.
While some individuals explore international destinations for plastic surgery due to cost considerations, experts emphasize the importance of post-procedure care accessibility. Dr. Dorafshar urges patients to consider potential complications and access to care, particularly if complications arise after traveling abroad for surgery.
In the U.S., updated safety protocols for BBL procedures, recommended by the Aesthetic Society, aim to mitigate risks. Dr. Dorafshar reassures that American board-certified plastic surgeons typically adhere to these recommendations, emphasizing the importance of thorough research and certification when selecting a surgeon for elective plastic surgery procedures.
