Monica McDonald, an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) at CHI Health’s Regional Cancer Center, emphasizes the importance of comprehensive sun protection measures.
Wear Protective Clothing
“When it’s sweltering at a hundred degrees, we often overlook the necessity of protective clothing,” McDonald said. “Long-sleeve shirts, wide-brim hats, and sunglasses are essential. These items shield your skin and eyes from harmful UV rays.”
Year-Round Eye Protection
The office stresses the importance of wearing sunglasses throughout the year. McDonald highlighted that our eyes are constantly exposed to the sun’s radiation, regardless of the season.
“We must remember that our eyes are exposed to the sun year-round,” McDonald explained. “Whether you’re out on the lake during summer or skiing in winter, UV light can cause significant damage to your eyes. Protecting your sight is crucial.”
Prepare for Sun Exposure
McDonald also advises making a list and packing a bag with essential items before heading out into the sun. This proactive approach ensures you don’t forget critical items that help keep you safe.
