South Korean cosmetics leader AmorePacific has unveiled an advanced makeup manufacturing system utilizing AI and robotic arm technology to provide customers with personalized cosmetic solutions.
Transforming Cosmetic Selection
Historically, choosing cosmetics involved evaluating brand reputation, packaging aesthetics, user reviews, and store staff recommendations. These traditional methods often offered limited choices and frequently did not address individual skin needs or conditions adequately.
AmorePacific’s innovative system goes beyond these conventional approaches. Leveraging artificial intelligence, the company now provides customers with a broader selection of products. Their AI technology can recommend the ideal match from a palette of 205 different skin foundation shades or 366 lip product colors. This system employs non-laboratory skin scans and utilizes 78 years of accumulated data to produce customized cosmetics directly in-store using a specialized robotic machine.
AI Enhances Personalization
Lee Young-jin, AmorePacific’s advisor for Custom Beauty Biz Development, explained, “We have developed a solution using deep learning and machine learning techniques to evaluate skin conditions that were previously assessed by clinical experts. This has led to the creation of our AI-based skin diagnosis service.”
The high demand for this technology is evident, with reservations for customized skin and lip products quickly filling up. Kwon You-jin, a 32-year-old customer, shared her experience, saying, “Everyone has their own specific skin tone, but usually, we buy the most common colors available over-the-counter. Even though I’m interested in cosmetics, analyzing them myself is difficult. AI provides a more accurate analysis for me.”
Accolades and Future Prospects
This cutting-edge technology has earned recognition at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2023, where it won the Innovation Award in the Robotics category. Additionally, AmorePacific’s research paper on the AI-based skin diagnosis system was published in the International Journal of Cosmetic Science in December of the previous year.
Yang Yong Suk, principal researcher at South Korea’s Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI), anticipates that AI algorithms will accelerate the pace of product launches within the industry.
Growing Market for AI in Beauty
The market for AI applications in the beauty and cosmetics sector is expected to expand significantly. According to a January report by Business Research Company, the market is projected to grow from $3.27 billion in 2023 to $8.1 billion by 2028. This growth is driven by increasing demand for personalized beauty recommendations, advanced skin analysis and diagnostics, virtual makeup artists, and the influence of social media.
