Oliver Callan, the popular RTÉ Radio 1 presenter and comedian, made a heartfelt return to the airwaves on Monday morning after taking time off to undergo skin cancer surgery. Addressing his listeners, Callan expressed his gratitude to Maura Derrane for stepping in at short notice to host his morning show during his absence.
Callan revealed that he had been diagnosed with basal cell carcinoma, a mild form of skin cancer, which required surgical intervention. Reflecting on his experience, he shared, “I’d anticipated a brief absence, but the procedure took longer than expected. Like many with Irish skin, I found myself dealing with this condition, which fortunately doesn’t spread but necessitates surgical removal.”
Detailing the location of the carcinoma, Callan humorously remarked on the delicate area near his nose and lip, jokingly mentioning the challenges of maintaining a straight face during recovery. Despite the seriousness of the procedure, he found solace in keeping abreast of current events and preparing for future shows.
“With the show’s return, I’ve delved into research and engaged with upcoming authors we’ll feature this summer,” Callan quipped, noting his new appearance sporting a mustache due to the temporary inability to shave around the scar.
Oliver Callan’s return to RTÉ Radio 1 marks not only his comeback to broadcasting but also serves as a reminder of the importance of vigilance in skin health among listeners.
