In a recent special programme organized by the Department of Burns and Plastic Surgery at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Bhubaneswar, plastic surgery was underscored as a pivotal component of healthcare, offering transformative solutions for a range of medical conditions. Experts convened during the Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Week, held under the auspices of the Association of Plastic Surgeons of India (APSI), where various facets of plastic surgery were highlighted.
The week-long event featured specialized days dedicated to different subspecialties within the field of plastic surgery. Activities included a series of surgeries, awareness programs, and recognition of burn and cancer survivors. Noteworthy initiatives encompassed complimentary compression therapy for lymphedema patients and free VAC therapy for wound care.
Dr. Sanjay Giri, Head of the Department, elaborated on significant achievements, such as the successful reduction of extensive lymphedema through compression therapy, excision of a large synovial cell sarcoma of the scalp, and the utilization of allografts from skin banks in Mumbai, Bangalore, and Kolkata for patients with substantial burn injuries. The department also celebrated successful reimplantation procedures for forearms and fingers.
AIIMS Bhubaneswar’s Executive Director, Ashutosh Biswas, praised the institution’s state-of-the-art burns unit for its pivotal role in treating severe burn injury patients not only from Odisha but also from neighboring states. He emphasized the unit’s track record of excellence in delivering high-quality care and conducting intricate surgeries, solidifying its status as an indispensable component of the healthcare ecosystem.
The Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Week served as a platform to showcase the advancements and critical contributions of plastic surgery in enhancing patient outcomes and quality of life across diverse medical conditions.
