CBS12 research indicating that prolonged use of cellphones, TVs, and tablets could lead to “digital-related eye strain.”
Digital Devices and Eye Strain
Our current focus is on whether these devices are also impacting our skin. Emerging research suggests that the blue light emitted from our screens might be contributing to premature aging, according to several studies published by the National Library of Medicine.
The Impact of Blue Light on Skin
Dr. Jason Hechtman from the Tampa General Hospital Cancer Institute shared insights with CBS12 News about the potential effects of blue light on our skin. While Floridians are accustomed to applying sunscreen before heading outdoors, many don’t consider the need to protect their skin from the blue light emitted by digital devices used daily.
Blue light can have both harmful and beneficial effects depending on its intensity. However, the long-term and repeated exposure from devices remains not fully understood. Nonetheless, physicians and researchers can make informed guesses based on known effects of blue and infrared lights.
“People often don’t consider the light emitted from our cellphones, TVs, and computer screens,” Dr. Hechtman explained. “Blue light, in particular, causes oxidative stress and free radical production in the skin, which can age the skin and damage collagen. It also affects pigmentation, making your skin look older. Infrared light, which also comes from these devices, acts as a heat-producing agent and causes deeper skin damage.”
Protective Measures
Dr. Hechtman recommends following the 20-20 rule: after 20 minutes of screen time, take a 20-minute break. This can help mitigate some of the potential damage caused by prolonged exposure to blue light.
Diet also plays a role in skin health. A study published last year in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology suggests that a diet high in antioxidants can help protect the skin. This includes consuming fruits, vegetables, beans, and taking oral supplements such as vitamins C and E.
Conclusion
As research continues to uncover the effects of digital device usage on our skin, it’s crucial to stay informed and take preventive measures. Incorporating simple practices like screen breaks and a diet rich in antioxidants can help mitigate some of the potential damage caused by blue light exposure.
