In a candid discussion on the “Messy with Christina Applegate & Jamie-Lynn Sigler” podcast, Emmy-winning actress Christina Applegate, 52, addressed the harsh realities of beauty standards in Hollywood and her own experiences with plastic surgery.
During the episode, Applegate recounted a troubling incident from her past while recording dialogue for a film. The actress, who was in her 40s at the time, described her dismay upon seeing the aging effects on her face during an ADR session. An unnamed director criticized her appearance, remarking that the film studio had to spend considerable resources to digitally alter her face. Applegate shared that the director, who was a friend, assumed she wouldn’t be upset due to her tough persona.
“He didn’t think I would care because he said I was so tough,” Applegate told co-host Jamie-Lynn Sigler. Despite the director’s subsequent apology, Applegate admitted she “suffered inside” from the experience, highlighting the pressures of aging in the entertainment industry. “It’s like they throw you out to pasture, unless you’re ready to play grandmothers,” Applegate said.
In addition to discussing her experiences with beauty standards, Applegate opened up about her decision to undergo plastic surgery in her late 20s. The “Dead to Me” star revealed that a television producer, whose identity she did not disclose but described as working on “a very famous show,” recommended she address the bags under her eyes. The producer suggested that the bags were causing lighting issues and advised Applegate to have them surgically removed.
Acknowledging that the bags were hereditary, Applegate chose to follow the recommendation. “At 27 years old, I had the only plastic surgery I’ve ever had, which was to remove the bags under my eyes,” Applegate said. She also noted that she had undergone liposuction around the age of 26 to address weight gain in a specific area.
Applegate’s revelations offer a glimpse into the often unspoken pressures faced by women in Hollywood, reflecting broader issues related to aging and beauty standards in the entertainment industry.
