Sun Pharmaceutical Industries saw its stock rise by 1.71% to Rs 1,780.50 following the announcement of the launch of Tedizolid Phosphate tablets in India under the brand name Starizo.
Starizo is a novel antibacterial medication classified as an oxazolidinone. It is designed to treat acute bacterial skin and skin structure infections (ABSSSI) and does not require dose adjustments for elderly patients, those with hepatic or renal impairments, or patients undergoing haemodialysis.
Sun Pharmaceutical has secured the rights from Merck Sharp & Dohme (MSD) Singapore Trading Pte to develop, manufacture, and market Tedizolid Phosphate in India. This launch addresses a significant need, as skin and soft tissue infections accounted for approximately 29-32% of all infections in India between 2018 and 2019. These infections are often complicated by comorbidities such as diabetes, obesity, and renal and hepatic dysfunction.
The rise of drug-resistant bacteria, particularly methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), has further complicated treatment. MRSA is responsible for nearly one-third of ABSSSIs, with its prevalence in India increasing from 28.4% in 2016 to 42.6% in 2021. The growing incidence of these resistant infections underscores the need for effective treatment options.
Tedizolid Phosphate, marketed under a licensing agreement with MSD, offers a promising solution with its once-daily dosing regimen. Kirti Ganorkar, CEO of India Business at Sun Pharma, emphasized the importance of this new treatment in managing drug-resistant infections, stating, “With STARIZO, we are introducing a treatment option that is effective and offers the convenience of once-a-day dosing.”
In other news, Sun Pharmaceutical Industries recently reported a 40.20% increase in consolidated net profit to Rs 2,835.6 crore for Q1 FY25, compared to the previous year. Revenue from operations also rose by 5.96% to Rs 12,652.75 crore. The company’s stock reached an all-time high of Rs 1,781.55 during intraday trading today.
