As we age, our eyes can become less efficient, making it harder to focus on nearby and distant objects. To promote eye health during National Eye Health Week (September 23-29, 2024), Optegra Eye Clinic Preston recommends several lifestyle changes to “age-proof” our vision.
Firstly, schedule regular eye exams, ideally every two years, as suggested by the NHS. These checks can identify early signs of eye conditions and assist with any vision issues. Additionally, take breaks from screens using the 20-20-20 technique: every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds.
Eating a balanced diet rich in colorful vegetables and oily fish can also enhance eye health. Nutrients like Vitamin C in peppers and strawberries can help delay cataracts and macular degeneration, while Omega-3 from salmon can prevent dry eyes. Staying active with low-impact exercise can reduce eye pressure and strain, especially when participating in racquet sports.
Mr. Amir Hamid, Medical Director at Optegra, emphasizes the importance of eye tests in detecting conditions like glaucoma and age-related macular degeneration, which may not show symptoms initially. Early detection is crucial for effective treatment.
Patient Alastair Kay shares his experience, revealing that a routine eye test uncovered cataracts in both eyes. After surgery, his golf game improved significantly, showcasing the positive impact of proactive eye care.
Optegra Eye Health Care has been a leader in ophthalmic services since 2007, performing over one million eye procedures across its 40 locations in the UK, Czech Republic, and Poland, and continues to deliver high-quality care and outcomes.
