Airi Hirase, a 27-year-old Japanese online influencer, has opened up about her extensive journey through more than 20 cosmetic surgeries, costing approximately 24 million yen (around RM718,248 or US$170,000). Hirase attributes her drastic decisions to emotional trauma stemming from childhood abuse, particularly criticism from her mother, who often compared her unfavorably to her father, a man who left a legacy of debt.
Residing with her mother in Ibaraki prefecture, Hirase has envisioned plastic surgery as a way to escape her painful past since age 15. She underwent her first procedure at 19 and has since amassed a following of 1.1 million on Instagram and 300,000 on X, sharing transformative before-and-after photos that resonate with many. Hirase recalls being bullied throughout her childhood, leading to an inferiority complex and struggles with self-image, even attempting suicide during her secondary school years.
Determined to change her life, she worked various part-time jobs from the age of 16, eventually saving about 10 million yen (approximately RM299,906 or US$70,000) over eight years to fund her surgeries. Although she feels satisfied with her new appearance, Hirase admits to ongoing struggles with self-confidence.
Recently, she expressed her desire to break the cycle of abuse in her own future family, vowing to provide love and support to her children. Chinese psychological counselor Zhang Xiwen noted that individuals with inferiority complexes often struggle to appreciate their self-worth, regardless of their successes. Online observers have praised Hirase for her resilience, while others expressed sympathy for her difficult upbringing.
