In a recent episode of Clean Beauty School, board-certified dermatologist Dr. Jeanine Downie shared her insights on skin care as we age, emphasizing that while it’s always possible to change habits, reversing skin damage requires time and effort. “You can always change your habits—you can always improve. You can stop smoking, eat more vegetables, sleep more, and stop tanning. But you still may have damage, and fixing it takes time. Quite frankly, nothing happens overnight,” she said.
Dr. Downie’s approach to skin care is both practical and comprehensive. She encourages outdoor activity for its mental health benefits but stresses the importance of sun protection. “We want people exercising outdoors—golfing, playing tennis, playing pickleball—because of the endorphins that you get from physical activity. These habits can reduce depression, which has become an epidemic. However, we want people outside with sunscreen!”
She also addresses common misconceptions about sunscreen discomfort, noting the variety of high-quality formulations available today. Among her recommended products are SkinMedica Total Defense + Repair Sunscreen, Senté Even Tone Mineral Sunscreen SPF 40, and ISDIN Eryfotona Acticina.
Embrace a Mediterranean Diet
In addition to sun care, Dr. Downie advocates for a Mediterranean diet rich in whole foods and low in processed options. “I encourage everyone to adopt a more Mediterranean diet. Eating fresh foods—meat, chicken, fish, veggies—is essential,” she explained. She highlighted the significance of making informed food choices, particularly regarding hormone health as one ages. For example, opting for organic dairy can mitigate hormonal interactions that may lead to hair loss.
Update Your Hair Care Routine
Dr. Downie also emphasized the importance of adapting hair care routines as we age, which includes not just the hair on our heads but also our lashes and brows. She has become a proponent of hair supplements, particularly Nutrafol, after experiencing noticeable improvements in her hair’s strength and density.
“For those over 40, I advise paying special attention to your lashes, which tend to thin with age. Thicker lashes can enhance a youthful appearance, so caring for them is crucial. Be gentle when removing makeup around the eyes,” she recommended.
