As autumn sets in, the popularity of pumpkin spice lattes (PSLs) rises, but skincare expert Hayley Walker warns that these seasonal favorites could contribute to breakouts. The caffeine, sugar, and acidity in PSLs can trigger inflammation and increase oil production, leading to acne.
Walker explains that caffeine raises cortisol levels, which can exacerbate skin issues, while high sugar content spikes insulin, resulting in oilier skin. Additionally, the acidity of coffee combined with dairy can irritate sensitive skin. To combat these effects, she recommends incorporating skincare ingredients like salicylic acid, niacinamide, and retinol, which can help clear breakouts and improve skin texture. Hydration can also be boosted with hyaluronic acid, while benzoyl peroxide is suggested for persistent inflamed acne. By adjusting dietary habits and skincare routines, individuals can enjoy the season while maintaining clear skin.
