Wamiqa Gabbi, known for her roles in web series such as Jubilee and Modern Love: Chennai, recently discussed her skincare routine. She highlighted her fondness for traditional beauty remedies, particularly the use of rose water as a toner and coconut oil for both hair and skin. Notably, she shared her experience using a turmeric and honey face mask, which she claims promotes glowing skin and helps reduce blemishes.
To explore the benefits of this natural remedy, Dr. Sri Sahithi Konidena, Founder and Chief Dermatologist at Prime Derm Skin and Hair Clinic in Hyderabad. Dr. Konidena explained that turmeric and honey have been celebrated for their anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties for centuries. “This ancient combination is known to moisturize, exfoliate, and heal, and it may also help reduce acne and enhance skin radiance,” she said.
However, Dr. Konidena advised caution when applying the mask, especially for individuals with allergies or those exposed to the sun frequently. “Increased vigilance is essential when using this mask on sun-exposed skin due to the potential photosensitizing effects of curcumin,” she cautioned.
The dermatologist noted a rise in cases of contact dermatitis linked to home remedies. “I recommend limiting use to occasional applications for less than ten minutes. While this combination can help prevent blemishes, it’s safer to use commercially prepared products,” she suggested.
Dr. Konidena also pointed out that summer may not be the ideal season for turmeric application. She highlighted potential health risks, stating, “Even long-used products can lead to dermatitis due to sensitization or changes in formulations, especially given issues with food adulteration.” She emphasized the importance of ensuring the purity of turmeric and honey, as additives can pose serious allergy risks.
Immediate allergic reactions may manifest as itching, red bumps, or rashes, which can later lead to pigmentation patches. To manage these reactions, Dr. Konidena recommended topical corticosteroids and antihistamines. “Topical corticosteroids typically need to be applied for two to three weeks to prevent rebound effects. In chronic cases, emollients should also be used,” she added.
As beauty enthusiasts explore ancient remedies, it remains crucial to approach natural products with care and knowledge.
