Julia Morris, the host of I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out Here!, has taken to Instagram to share her recent experience with skin cancer, urging her followers to prioritize sun protection. In a hospital photo, she reflected on her past habits, stating, “How is your 50+ working out for you? I wish I had used [sunscreen] more in my life. Another pretty big skin cancer removed this week. Going to have to up my eyebrow drawing game.”
Morris emphasized the dangers of the Australian sun, admitting, “While I lived like a pig on a spit in my 20s, I’m absolutely suffering the consequences now. Please slip slop slap, and as always, early detection is the key.” She expressed gratitude to her medical team for their care.
The post garnered support from fellow celebrities, with actor Sam Neill commenting, “Go well, get well Julia. And brava for the Santa hat!” Dr. Chris Brown, her former co-host, added, “I hope you’re doing okay. Plus, you rock a headband. I’m sure it’s fashion somewhere…” Bindi Irwin and Tim Campbell also sent their well wishes, highlighting the community’s support during her recovery.
The Cancer Council reports that at least two in three Australians will be diagnosed with skin cancer in their lifetime, which causes more deaths annually than transport accidents. There are three primary types of skin cancer:
Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC): The most common form, often arising from sun exposure. It appears as a shiny bump and, while rarely spreading, can damage surrounding tissue if left untreated.
Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC): This form appears as a scaly, red patch that doesn’t heal, also linked to sun exposure. It can spread if not addressed.
Melanoma: The most severe type, originating in pigment-producing cells. It may manifest as a new or changing mole and can spread rapidly, but is treatable if detected early.
Morris’s experience serves as a stark reminder of the importance of sun safety and early detection in combating skin cancer.
