A new eye hospital has opened in Swindon, promising to significantly reduce waiting times for cataract surgery for residents in Wiltshire, Bath, and North East Somerset. SpaMedica, an independent provider of NHS eye health services, has inaugurated its 60th hospital at Canberra House, located within Lydiard Fields Business Park.
Patients can now expect treatment within four to eight weeks, a substantial improvement over the national target of 18 weeks. The facility boasts state-of-the-art diagnostic and treatment technology, ensuring patients receive high-quality care.
To facilitate access, SpaMedica offers a complimentary door-to-door transport service for those needing assistance traveling to and from appointments. Additionally, free parking is available on-site.
The new hospital joins a network of SpaMedica facilities in the southwest, including existing locations in Bristol, Taunton, and Gloucester. Since its establishment in 2008, SpaMedica has garnered a strong reputation, with every inspected hospital receiving a ‘good’ or ‘outstanding’ rating from the Care Quality Commission. Over 19,000 patients have rated the company five stars on the NHS website.
One satisfied patient, Graham from Bristol, praised his experience, stating, “I have had cataract removal on both eyes. The operations were both successful. Pre-operation assessments, operations, and post-operation follow-ups were all arranged speedily. The staff are really friendly and helpful, reassuring, and knowledgeable. The facilities are spotless. I was really impressed.”
With nearly 16 percent of Swindon’s population aged 65 or older and 30 percent of this demographic likely requiring cataract surgery, the new hospital is poised to benefit thousands of residents.
Hospital manager Hannah Young expressed enthusiasm about the new facility, saying, “We can’t wait to welcome patients to our Swindon hospital, where our experienced team will ensure they are well looked after throughout their treatment journey. We understand the impact that cataracts can have—not only on people’s vision but also on their quality of life—and we’re looking forward to helping lots of people see more clearly again.”
NHS patients diagnosed with cataracts or posterior capsule opacification can request a referral to SpaMedica Swindon through their optician or GP. Individuals experiencing symptoms such as blurred vision, difficulty driving at night, challenges in watching television or reading, sensitivity to sunlight, fading colors, or frequent changes in their spectacle or contact lens prescriptions are encouraged to schedule an appointment with their optician. The optician will conduct an eye check and refer them for treatment if necessary.
