Robert Lindsay has opened up about his experiences with Hollywood friends, expressing his struggle to recognize them due to extensive cosmetic procedures.
The actor, who stars alongside Sue Johnston, 80, and Anita Dobson, 75, in the new Channel 4 drama series Generation Z, reflected on the changes he observed in his old acquaintances during a recent trip to Los Angeles. “I just came back from LA… I was catching up with some very old friends, and I didn’t recognize any of them. I’m serious. I was completely shocked,” Lindsay shared.
Sue Johnston echoed Lindsay’s sentiments, remarking on the trend of cosmetic surgery in the industry. “I think it’s just sad, don’t you?” she said, adding that she is proud of how she and her colleagues have embraced aging naturally. “We’ve gone with the flow, got our wrinkles, and let me tell you, we are growing old quite disgracefully,” Johnston stated.
Anita Dobson chimed in, highlighting a growing preference among casting directors for actors without cosmetic enhancements. “I was talking to an agent yesterday who gets lots of requests from casting directors saying they don’t want anybody who’s had any work done,” she explained. Dobson noted that some actors hesitate to take roles that might require them to hide their cosmetic work. “If they were playing creatures like Sue and I are playing, they’d say, ‘Oh, no, I’ve just had Botox all over and my chin done and my nose done and I don’t really want to cover it up,'” she added.
Generation Z is set in a quiet town that faces apocalyptic chaos after an army convoy overturns near a care home, resulting in a deadly chemical leak. A group of teenagers becomes embroiled in the crisis when one of their grandmothers gets infected.
Lindsay, known for his role in My Family, also shared insights about his family life, mentioning his sons, Samuel, 24, and James, 21, with wife Rosemarie Ford, and his daughter Sydney, 36, from a previous relationship with actress Diane Weston. He revealed that his decision to join the cast was influenced by his children’s positive response to the script, particularly given the challenges they faced during the pandemic.
“Yeah, although it was a very mysterious offer,” Lindsay said of his role as Morgan in the series. He described a particularly memorable moment during filming when the production team offered him a special effects prop. “I had a body part—a torso with bits missing and a cut through the stomach—made for a certain sequence. After the shoot, the producers asked if I wanted it, or else they were going to throw it away. I said, ‘Why not?'”
Lindsay recalled the reaction of his family when they opened the delivery containing the prop: “My wife and my young son opened it, probably thinking it was a bottle of champagne or something. I heard the scream from them downstairs.”
The insights from Lindsay, Johnston, and Dobson reflect not only their experiences in the entertainment industry but also their perspectives on aging and the pressure of maintaining appearances in Hollywood.
