Ajay Devgn recently shared details about an eye surgery he underwent following an injury while filming the action-packed Singham Again. In an appearance on Bigg Boss 18, Devgn told host Salman Khan about his experience, stating, “I lost my vision for two or three months. I went through a little surgery also,” highlighting the serious nature of his temporary vision loss.
Understanding Temporary Vision Loss: Causes and Impact
Temporary vision loss, which can stem from various injuries, is often a sudden and alarming event. Dr. Vinit Banga, director of neurology and head of neuro-intervention at Fortis Hospital, Faridabad, explained that eye trauma may result in either temporary or permanent vision loss depending on the injury’s severity, with treatment approaches differing accordingly.
Dr. Poonam Yadav, an ophthalmology consultant at Manipal Hospital in Sarjapur, outlined common causes of vision impairment following eye trauma, distinguishing between injuries from sharp objects and those from blunt force. “Sharp object injuries can damage the eye’s structure or the orbital wall, while blunt force typically increases pressure within the eyeball or orbit, resulting in temporary or permanent structural changes,” she said.
Common Causes of Temporary Vision Loss Due to Trauma
Some frequent causes of temporary vision impairment due to trauma include:
Globe Rupture: This involves structural deformity or dislocation of the eye, often requiring surgical correction.
Haematoma: Bleeding inside or around the eye may necessitate surgical intervention.
Optic Neuropathy: Compression or severing of the optic nerve can lead to partial or irreversible vision loss, with timely decompression sometimes restoring vision.
Corneal Injury: Corneal abrasions or tears take time to heal and may improve with surgical help.
Blood or Fluid Collection in the Eye: Absorption over time may resolve the issue, but surgical removal may also be necessary.
Lens Trauma: Injury to the eye’s lens can cause traumatic cataracts or lens dislocation, both treatable by surgery.
Retinal Detachment or Tears: This damage to the retina often requires surgical repair.
Optic neuritis, an inflammation of the optic nerve, can also cause blurred vision or sudden loss in one eye, often with pain during eye movement, noted Dr. Banga.
Precautions After Eye Trauma
Dr. Yadav advised caution when dealing with eye injuries, stressing the importance of avoiding eye-rubbing or self-treatment. “Cover the eye with a clean cloth and seek immediate medical care,” she recommended.
Seeking professional help after eye trauma is crucial to assess the extent of the damage and create a tailored treatment plan. Dr. Banga emphasized the role of an eye specialist in managing vision recovery and taking preventive measures against future vision loss.
In cases like Devgn’s, appropriate intervention not only aids recovery but also serves as a reminder of the importance of eye safety, particularly in high-risk environments.
