Today marks a life-changing moment for Rupeni Ragia Mudunavuku, who has experienced a remarkable improvement in his vision following a free eye surgery provided by the Chinese Bright Journey Medical Team at the Pacific Eye Institute in Suva. The team aims to complete a total of 60 eye surgeries during their visit.
Mudunavuku, 70, learned about the opportunity for free eye surgery at Fiji Showcase, where he received an eye checkup from the Pacific Eye Institute. He emphasized that many people often neglect the importance of eye care, only seeking help when issues such as cataracts arise.
“Many of us take our eyesight for granted,” he said. “We only seek help when we start facing problems like cataracts.”
Mudunavuku urged everyone to prioritize their eye health, recognizing the crucial role vision plays in experiencing the world.
Elenoa Raikabakaba, Acting Head of the Eye Department at the Pacific Eye Institute, highlighted that cataracts remain the leading cause of visual impairment in Fiji and throughout the Pacific region. On the first day of surgery, 34 patients underwent successful procedures, with more expected today.
Chinese Ambassador to Fiji, Zhou Jian, expressed gratitude for the initiative, noting that the free surgeries have helped many Fijians regain their vision and return to their daily lives. He also emphasized the positive impact these surgeries have on families, offering hope and life-changing improvements.
