Music icon Sting has shared his candid thoughts on vanity, plastic surgery, and how maintaining a healthy lifestyle plays a crucial role in his long-standing career. In an interview, the legendary musician revealed that he has no interest in undergoing plastic surgery and believes his current appearance is “perfect.”
When asked whether he felt any pressure to alter his appearance, Sting responded bluntly, “Look at me — I’m f—ing perfect. What’s the matter with you?” His confident dismissal of cosmetic procedures highlights his philosophy of self-acceptance.
However, Sting also acknowledged that a certain degree of vanity is essential for a performer. “You need enough professional vanity to go onstage in the first place,” he said. “I wouldn’t want to go on if I was overweight or wearing spandex. If that happens to me, I’m not going onstage.” He emphasized that while vanity plays a role in his performances, it is not harmful as long as it is kept in balance.
The 72-year-old artist explained that he doesn’t spend excessive time obsessing over his appearance, such as frequent visits to the hairdresser or wearing costumes like wigs or corsets. Instead, he maintains his physical and mental sharpness through consistent fitness routines. “I swim every morning when I can. I studied yoga for 35 years, so everything is related to that. I stretch, I work out, I walk. I’m physically very fit, and that keeps me mentally fit,” he shared.
Sting further elaborated on how vanity and discipline are intertwined in his profession. “Fifty percent vanity — maybe 55 — and 45% discipline,” he said, adding that he continues to perform at a level comparable to much younger artists. “I’m doing the job of a 25-year-old.”
Throughout his illustrious career, which began in the late ’70s with the band The Police and later saw remarkable success as a solo artist, Sting has built a reputation not only for his musical talents but also for his ability to stay in top form. With more than 100 million records sold worldwide, his healthy lifestyle choices have undoubtedly played a role in sustaining his career longevity.
The musician is also known for his moderation in other aspects of life, particularly when it comes to alcohol and smoking. While he enjoys a glass or two of wine or mezcal after shows, he emphasizes that he is not inclined to quit drinking. However, he takes pride in never having smoked tobacco, revealing that he was always aware of its dangers, even before widespread health research. “I was an athlete as a young person, and smoking was not what you did,” Sting explained, adding that he often threw his father’s cigarettes into the fire as a rebellious gesture.
In summary, Sting’s views on vanity, fitness, and self-care reflect a balanced approach to aging and performing. His focus on staying physically active and mentally sharp, combined with a healthy dose of professional vanity, allows him to continue doing what he loves at the highest level, defying the traditional expectations of aging rock stars.
