St. Luke’s Medical Center (SLMC) in Quezon City unveiled its new “Skin Center” on Monday, marking a significant expansion of its dermatology services. The center promises a comprehensive array of advanced clinical, aesthetic, and skin care treatments.
In his opening speech, Dr. Dennis Serrano, CEO and President of SLMC, emphasized the hospital’s commitment to elevating dermatology services at the Quezon City branch. “There was a huge debt to pay in advancing dermatology here,” he stated. “I promised to do everything we can to surpass what we offer in Global City and bring it to Quezon City.”
Dr. Serrano highlighted the historical significance of the Quezon City location, noting that it is where St. Luke’s dermatology services first began. He expressed hope that the opening of the Skin Center would be just the first step in a broader effort to transform the dermatology landscape at the facility.
Dr. Cynthia Tan, Head of the Dermatology Department at SLMC Quezon City, shared a poignant memory of the challenges the department faced during the COVID-19 pandemic, when they were at risk of closure due to failing to meet patient quotas. “We didn’t hit our quotas, and we got a note from the administration that we might have to close,” Dr. Tan recalled. “We appealed to Dr. Art dela Pena and Dr. Ben Campomanes, explaining that we had the residency program in Quezon City, and that we were the pioneers here.”
Dr. Tan and her team successfully negotiated for a reduced patient quota, which ultimately helped them not only meet but exceed expectations, serving over 1.2 million patients.
The newly launched Skin Center will offer specialized services, including the precise removal of skin cancer, pediatric dermatology, and a variety of cosmetic dermatological treatments.
