Jay Leno, the iconic former host of The Tonight Show, revealed he sustained an eye injury after a fall while attempting to descend a hill. The incident, which occurred while Leno was walking from his hotel to a restaurant, left him wearing an eye patch but didn’t stop him from performing shortly afterward.
On Monday, November 18, Leno recounted the misstep. “To get to the restaurant, I didn’t have a car, so you had to walk about a mile and a half around. I said, ‘Well, the hill doesn’t look that steep—about 60 or 70 feet. Let me see if I can go down the hill,’” Leno explained.
The decision proved costly. “I fell down. Boom, boom, boom. I rolled down the hill, hit my head on a rock, and it knocked me in the eye,” he said, lifting his eye patch to reveal a swollen, shut eye.
Despite the injury, Leno pushed forward with his scheduled performance at Yaamava’ Casino in Southern California. “When I came back to LA, I went to the hospital,” he said. “It was only a couple of hours after the show. It’s not that big of a deal—it’s fine!”
Leno quipped about his streak of mishaps, joking, “The great thing about this age [is] you don’t learn by your mistakes. You just keep doing the same stupid thing.”
A History of Injuries
This latest incident adds to a series of accidents the 73-year-old has experienced in recent years. In November 2022, Leno suffered severe burns in a gasoline fire while working on one of his vintage cars. The blaze caused second- and third-degree burns, necessitating skin graft surgeries on his chest, hands, and face.
Earlier this year, in January 2023, Leno endured another accident when he fell off a motorcycle while test-driving a 1940 Indian bike. The crash left him with a broken collarbone, two broken ribs, and two cracked kneecaps.
Recalling the event, Leno explained he had detected a gasoline leak while riding. “So I turned down a side street and cut through a parking lot, and unbeknownst to me, some guy had a wire strung across the parking lot with no flag hanging from it,” Leno said. “I didn’t see it until it was too late. It just clotheslines me and, boom, knocked me off the bike.”
Despite his injuries, Leno’s resilience and humor remain intact. After each incident, the entertainer has returned to work, assuring fans that he’s “OK” and ready to perform.
