The Noor Dubai Foundation has successfully concluded its latest blindness prevention camp in Nigeria, providing critical eye care services to 1,742 patients. The initiative, held at Asokoro District Hospital in Abuja, included 207 surgeries, the distribution of 330 pairs of eyeglasses, and 223 medical prescriptions. This marks the foundation’s second such camp in the country, continuing its commitment to addressing blindness and visual impairments through free eye exams and surgical interventions.
Dr. Manal Omran Taryam, CEO and Board of Trustees member at Noor Dubai Foundation, praised the camp’s success, highlighting its significance in a nation where approximately 24 million people suffer from some form of visual impairment, including 1.3 million who are blind. Nigeria’s capital, Abuja, where the camp took place, is home to 1.6 million residents.
The camp was organized in collaboration with the DP World Foundation, which has been a key partner in Noor Dubai’s mission. Dr. Taryam stressed the importance of these programs, noting that the Foundation’s efforts aim to combat blindness and improve the overall quality of life for individuals in underserved communities.
Noor Dubai’s impact extends beyond Abuja. Over the last four years, the foundation has spearheaded a comprehensive blindness prevention program in Katsina State. In partnership with the state’s Ministry of Health, Noor Dubai upgraded three hospitals into specialized eye care centers, improved 250 primary healthcare facilities, and provided 128 medical devices. The program has performed 12,000 surgeries and conducted 25,000 consultations, offering free eye treatments to thousands of individuals. Additionally, the initiative has strengthened school health services to ensure that students and teachers receive essential eye care.
Latifa Al Qemzi, Director General of the DP World Foundation, expressed satisfaction with the camp’s completion and emphasized the organization’s ongoing commitment to improving healthcare access in underserved regions. “Our collaboration with Noor Dubai aligns with our mission to create a positive social impact by addressing vital health needs,” Al Qemzi said.
The collaboration between Noor Dubai Foundation and the DP World Foundation continues to yield significant benefits, not just in Nigeria, but across other regions in need. Together, they are making strides in combating visual impairments and restoring sight to individuals, thereby enhancing their quality of life.
The International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness reports that 10.8% of Nigeria’s population suffers from visual impairments, with women representing 54% of those affected. These statistics further highlight the importance of Noor Dubai’s efforts in tackling such a critical public health issue.
Through their sustained efforts, Noor Dubai Foundation remains dedicated to empowering communities with long-term solutions to eye health challenges, ensuring a brighter future for those in need.
