In his new book Your Mom’s Gonna Love Me, released on December 3, comedian Matt Rife addressed speculation about his appearance, insisting that his dramatic facial changes were the result of late-onset puberty rather than any secret plastic surgeries. Rife explained that puberty, which he says arrived late at 20, transformed his looks over a few months, making him appear more like his actual age.
“Puberty, after its sweet time for more than 20 years, finally decided to hit me square in the face,” Rife wrote. “I went from looking like a 13-year-old to looking like, you know, my actual age—like an actual grown-ish man.”
The changes included a wider face, more prominent features, and a few extra inches in height. He also credited his regular gym sessions with comedian Dane Cook for contributing to his physical transformation, stating that daily workouts helped clear his head.
Despite Rife’s explanation, his evolving appearance sparked numerous online theories suggesting he had undergone plastic surgery. The comedian criticized plastic surgeons who weighed in on his face changes, accusing them of displaying “a frightening lack of common sense.”
The speculation reached new heights after the release of Rife’s Netflix special Lucid in August. Fans expressed concern over his appearance, particularly his jawline, with some commenting that it looked “alarming.” A plastic surgery nurse even speculated that Rife might have had “drastic changes” to his face, suggesting the possibility of cheek implants or buccal fat removal. However, Rife dismissed these claims, insisting that puberty was the sole cause of his transformation.
Rife added that the physical changes have complicated his career as a comedian. “As a comic, you’re supposed to make the audience like you, right? Well, who the f*** likes attractive people? No one!” he wrote.
Amid the rumors, a celebrity injector estimated that Rife may have spent around $10,000 on his facial alterations, though the comedian firmly maintains that his new look is entirely the result of growing into his adult self.
