Preah Sihanouk Province hosted the 22nd Congress of the Cambodian Ophthalmological Society (COS) under the theme “Innovation in Eye Health, Building a Future Together,” where Professor Chheang Ra, Minister of Health, called on the association to embrace advancements in knowledge, techniques, and technology for timely and effective diagnosis and treatment of eye diseases.
During the event, the health minister emphasized the importance of aligning practices with global technological progress while upholding professional ethics. He urged COS members to comply with the Ministry of Health and Royal Government of Cambodia’s standards, ensuring the delivery of equitable, high-quality, and responsible healthcare services without discrimination.
Professor Chheang also advocated for the promotion of scientific research, international and domestic publications, and knowledge-sharing through workshops and continuous education. He encouraged COS to train its members in emerging skills and facilitate access to higher specialized studies by offering scholarships both within Cambodia and abroad.
The minister stressed the need for increased awareness and education on eye health issues to enhance community-level prevention, early intervention, and treatment. He called for strengthening existing partnerships and establishing new collaborations with domestic and international institutions to expand technical training and bolster professional capabilities.
Highlighting the importance of ophthalmology in public health, the minister reaffirmed the Ministry of Health’s prioritization of eye care as a transformative policy area. He underscored the necessity of improving infrastructure, procuring advanced equipment, and fostering innovation in the field. Furthermore, he encouraged hospitals in the provinces to promote ophthalmology as a specialty, ensuring broader access to eye care services across the nation.
The congress served as a vital platform to unite Cambodia’s ophthalmology community in addressing future challenges and enhancing the country’s eye health landscape.
