Japanese skincare brand OSAJI is launching a new product range designed to shield sensitive skin from external stressors and enhance moisture retention. The “Defence” series, set for release on February 12, 2025, will feature a face mist and balm aimed at providing comfort during the peak season for hay fever.
Spring is a challenging time for skin, as its barrier function weakens, making it more vulnerable to moisture loss and irritation from pollen and air pollutants. A recent survey by OSAJI, conducted in October 2023, found that 61% of female respondents aged 20 to 50 had experienced hay fever symptoms, with many suffering from skin issues like dryness, redness, and increased sensitivity, particularly around the eyes and nose.
The Defence series promises a dual effect of hydration and protection. The face mist contains pullulan, a compound that creates a thin protective layer on the skin, preventing pollen and pollutants from adhering. It also features two forms of hyaluronic acid: an adsorptive variant that forms a protective film and a penetrating variant that helps moisturize the skin’s outer layers, boosting its natural barrier function. The formula is further enhanced with plant-derived extracts, including Garden Thyme and Butterfly Bush, known for their skin-conditioning properties.
The mist is designed for gentle application, even over makeup, and will be available in a limited-edition pink color inspired by the spring season. It boasts a citrusy herbal fragrance, a blend of lemon, orange, sage, and black pepper. OSAJI recommends a “sandwich method” of use—applying the mist, followed by the Defence Balm, and finishing with another layer of mist to ensure complete protection.
The balm, packaged in a portable stick form, creates a barrier against environmental aggressors like pollen and fine particulate matter (PM2.5). Its semi-matte texture allows for use both before and over makeup, offering convenient touch-ups throughout the day. The stick’s design makes it easy to apply to sensitive areas like the eyes and nose without direct contact, minimizing irritation.
Founded in 2017, OSAJI was inspired by the “osaji” doctors of Japan’s Edo period, who prepared medicines for feudal lords and military leaders. Today, OSAJI aims to enhance consumers’ health and beauty through plant-based ingredients and dermatology research. The brand’s offerings span skincare, body care, hair care, makeup, and fragrances, with a focus on minimizing allergic risks.
In November 2023, OSAJI received an investment from the Japanese conglomerate Marubeni, which seeks to support the brand’s expansion in Southeast Asia. This move aligns with Marubeni’s strategy to foster growth in healthcare, wellness, and social infrastructure. The investment is expected to accelerate OSAJI’s reach in the region, particularly through expanding sales channels and catering to the evolving needs of next-generation Asian consumers.
