Mara Venier surprised her fans on the live broadcast of Domenica, revealing that she had undergone eye surgery before. During a segment with celebrated director Ferzan Ozpetek, who was in the studio to discuss his new film Diamonds—in which Venier also stars—she opened up about her ongoing health challenges.
As she introduced Ozpetek and a star-studded cast of actresses—including Luisa Ranieri, Jasmine Trinca, and Lunetta Savino—Venier casually mentioned her recent procedure, explaining that she was still recovering. “Yesterday I underwent eye surgery, I’m kaputt,” she said, with a light-hearted tone. When it came time for the interview, the veteran host passed the baton to Ozpetek, saying, “Now you have to speak, you will manage the interview.”
Venier’s eye issues have been ongoing for several months. In October, she appeared on Domenica In with her right eye noticeably blocked and revealed that she had just undergone another surgery. At the time, she shared with viewers, “I am still anesthetized, yesterday they operated on me again.”
Venier’s health concerns began earlier this year when she started noticing discomfort in her eye while filming Diamonds. She initially attributed the problem to dirty glasses, but the condition worsened. In an interview, she explained how a sudden hemorrhage in her retina led to rapid vision loss, culminating in near-total blindness in one eye. “One Monday evening while watching TV, I realized I was only seeing half the screen. I closed my left eye and realized I couldn’t see anything—just darkness,” she recalled. The following morning, she was already in surgery.
Despite the trauma, Venier is hopeful about her recovery. She explained in September that she had a few more surgeries to go and was optimistic that her vision would improve over time. “I see something now, but it’s still blurry. It’s a long process, but I’m in good hands,” she said.
While the causes of her condition remain unclear, Venier’s resilience and determination to continue her career amid these health struggles have inspired many. As she continues her recovery, fans are hoping that the latest surgery marks the end of her eye troubles and that she can fully regain her sight.
