Tammy Slaton’s journey toward skin removal surgery is facing a significant setback due to her ongoing vaping habit, as revealed in the season finale of 1000-Lb. Sisters. The 38-year-old star, who has been working to shed excess weight and improve her mobility, traveled to Pennsylvania with her sisters, Misty and Amy, to consult a new plastic surgeon after being turned away by her previous doctor.
Slaton, who has expressed a desire for comprehensive skin removal from various parts of her body, including her legs, stomach, arms, and face, described the physical challenges she faces due to the excess skin. “I want skin removed pretty much everywhere on my body,” she said. “I just want to be able to walk around better without losing balance. It’s hard to walk because of the skin. I walk like a daggone penguin.”
During the consultation with Dr. Peter Rubin, a Pittsburgh-based plastic surgeon, Slaton was initially approved for skin removal surgery on her lower stomach and chin. However, Dr. Rubin emphasized that the procedure would need to be broken into multiple sessions due to the extent of her case. “We can’t do it all at once,” he explained.
Despite the good news, Slaton’s excitement was tempered by concerns about her health. Dr. Rubin noted that her lab results indicated insufficient protein levels, and he raised concerns about the impact of her vaping habit on the success of the surgery. Slaton confessed to vaping regularly, primarily to manage her anxiety. “I mainly use it for anxiety. It helps calm me down,” she admitted, adding that she vapes several times a day, even during the night.
Dr. Rubin warned that nicotine use could severely hinder her recovery, saying, “By using nicotine products, it’s almost 100% guaranteed that you’ll have problems with wound healing or infection.” He stressed the urgency of quitting vaping, as well as improving her nutrition, before proceeding with surgery. “So #1 we got to get you off the vapes completely, #2 the nutrition is really important,” he said, advising a two-month wait to resolve these issues.
Slaton’s sister, Amy, acknowledged the challenge Slaton faces, noting that vaping has become an addiction for her. “I know it’s going to be really hard for her to quit vaping because instead of turning around one addiction, she went to another one. She went from food to vaping,” Amy shared, calling it her sister’s “security blanket.”
In a candid moment during a confessional, Tammy expressed frustration about the discussion surrounding her vaping. “I don’t want to talk about vaping. I think I might need a five ‘cause I’m gonna flip,” she said before storming off, revealing her anger and resistance to addressing the issue.
Despite the obstacles, Slaton remains hopeful for the future. “When I get rid of the skin, I’m going to be a brand-new me… better,” she said, envisioning a future where she can pursue modeling and even walk the catwalk.
As Slaton continues her journey, the focus remains on overcoming the hurdles posed by her addiction and health concerns, with hopes that in time, she will be ready for the surgery that could change her life.
