Millie Bobby Brown, the 21-year-old actress best known for her role in Stranger Things, has strongly condemned the media for its persistent negative coverage of her appearance. Frustrated with the ongoing criticism, Brown took to Instagram to call out journalists and the public for their harmful scrutiny of her evolving looks.
In a candid video posted on her Instagram, Brown opened up about the challenges of growing up under the constant gaze of the public eye. “I want to take a moment to address something that I think is bigger than just me, something that affects every young woman who grows up under public scrutiny,” she began, emphasizing the need to speak out.
Brown, who gained fame at just 10 years old through Stranger Things, reflected on her journey in the spotlight. “I grew up in front of the world, and for some reason, people can’t seem to grow with me,” she said. “Instead, they act like I’m supposed to stay frozen in time, like I should still look the way I did on Stranger Things Season 1. And because I don’t, I’m now a target.”
The actress highlighted the toxic nature of media coverage surrounding her appearance. Among them were articles such as “Why are Gen Zers like Millie Bobby Brown ageing so badly?” and “What has Millie Bobby Brown done to her face?” Brown also cited a piece that mocked her appearance by comparing her to a mother while guiding her younger sister, Ava, through Los Angeles. The actress also referenced British comedian Matt Lucas, who made disparaging remarks about her looks, later apologizing for his comments.
“This isn’t journalism. This is bullying,” Brown declared, condemning the way her body and appearance were being dissected by media outlets. “The fact that adult writers are spending their time dissecting my face, my body, my choices, it’s disturbing. The fact that some of these articles are written by women? Even worse,” she continued, expressing disappointment in how society often tears down young women instead of uplifting them.
Brown also reaffirmed her stance on growing up and embracing her own choices. “I refuse to apologize for growing up,” she stated. “I refuse to make myself smaller to fit the unrealistic expectations of people who can’t handle seeing a girl become a woman. I will not be shamed for how I look, how I dress, or how I present myself.”
She called for a shift in societal attitudes toward women, urging people to focus on positive reinforcement instead of perpetuating criticism. “Why is the knee-jerk reaction to say something horrible rather than to say something nice?” Brown questioned, before encouraging people to reflect on the discomfort that drives such negative reactions.
In her concluding remarks, Brown delivered a message of empowerment, not just for herself but for all young women facing similar challenges. “Let’s do better,” she urged. “Not just for me, but for every young girl who deserves to grow up without fear of being torn apart for simply existing.”
The post quickly garnered support from fellow celebrities, with Sarah Jessica Parker commenting, “Enormously proud of you. Xxx, SJ,” and Lewis Hamilton adding, “So truly proud of you Millie.”
