Bangalore – Nethradhama Super Speciality Eye Hospitals, a leading institution in eye care, accomplished a high-risk paediatric cataract surgery for an 8-month-old baby in Bangalore. Dr. Sri Ganesh, a renowned eye surgeon and the Chairman/Managing Director of Nethradhama, led the phacoemulsification surgery, successfully completing the procedure on both eyes within 30 minutes.
The infant patient, an 8-month-old girl, was born with congenital cataracts affecting both eyes. This condition, where the lens of the eyes is cloudy instead of clear after birth, can cause blindness. The surgery took place at Nethradhama’s Centre of Excellence in Jayanagar. Post-surgery, the baby has regained full vision and is reportedly recovering well, as stated by the medical team overseeing her care. Remarkably, the baby’s mother had the same condition, and Dr. Sri Ganesh successfully performed the surgery to restore her vision 22 years ago.
Dr. Sri Ganesh expressed his joy about the success of the rare surgery, stating, “We are delighted to provide a new lease of life to this baby by restoring her vision. For the first time in eight months, the baby was able to see her mother, and this gives us immense joy and satisfaction. At Nethradhama, our emphasis always lies on patient-centricity, quality, and care. With our commitment to providing vision care par excellence, we will continue to advance our surgical practice and expertise, staying at the forefront of technological advancements for enhanced patient satisfaction.”
Detailing the medical condition, Dr. Sri Ganesh explained that the baby had bilateral posterior polar congenital cataract, a complex condition requiring a different technique for operating on babies and IOL (Intraocular Lens) power calculation than that used for adults. The surgery involved aspirating the cataract with a micro-incision, followed by a posterior capsulorehxis and anterior vitrectomy. IOL power was calculated after performing scans under anesthesia during the surgery, and a foldable IOL was implanted.
The anesthesia team, led by Dr. Suman Shree, played a crucial role in managing such cases, ensuring the child was smoothly anesthetized, monitoring vital parameters, and controlling intraocular pressure during surgery.
Expressing gratitude, the baby’s mother stated, “I am immensely thankful to Dr. Sri Ganesh and his team for their unwavering support throughout this journey. We were apprehensive at first; however, the medical team’s expertise and compassionate care reassured us every step of the way. Today, I am extremely happy that my baby can see the world. We truly feel fortunate to have received such remarkable care and hospitality.”
