In a recent episode of the “She MD” podcast co-hosted by OB-GYN Dr. Thais Aliabadi, R&B artist SZA candidly discussed her experience with plastic surgery, specifically the removal of her breast implants. The singer opened up about the decision during the podcast episode released on Friday.
Reflecting on her past decision to undergo breast augmentation, SZA acknowledged that it was not the best choice given her heightened risk of breast cancer and the presence of excess fibrous tissue, known as fibrosis, in her breasts. Dr. Aliabadi estimated that SZA, whose mother had battled breast cancer, faced a lifetime risk of 27% for the disease.
Despite these concerns, SZA admitted that she had proceeded with the breast implants without consulting Dr. Aliabadi beforehand. She recounted the procedure and subsequent biopsy, revealing the extent of fibrosis present in her breasts.
Following the augmentation, SZA experienced a spike in fibrosis, leading to discomfort and pain. She explained that her breasts, naturally dense, had developed excessive scar tissue due to the implants. Ultimately, she made the decision to have the implants removed.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration lists various risks associated with breast implants, including scar tissue formation, implant rupturing, and the development of T-cell lymphoma. However, the FDA has not found any direct association between silicone gel-filled breast implants and certain health conditions like connective tissue disease or breast cancer.
SZA’s decision to share her journey with breast implants removal sheds light on the complexities and risks involved in plastic surgery, encouraging a broader conversation about body image and health.
