Savannah Guthrie, co-anchor of the Today show, stepped out for the annual holiday party despite ongoing recovery from extensive eye surgery. The event, held at Catch Steak on Wednesday night, marked a heartwarming reunion for the show’s hosts.
Guthrie, 47, shared her joy in a photo alongside co-anchor Hoda Kotb, host Jenna Bush Hager, and executive producer Libby Leist, captioning it, “Reunited and it feels so good.” She expressed gratitude for being able to join the festivities despite her recent medical ordeal, describing the evening as a chance to celebrate with her colleagues.
Hoda Kotb also took to social media to share the moment, highlighting Guthrie’s presence at the party and her ongoing recovery progress. Guthrie’s attendance at the event follows a challenging period, during which she underwent retinal surgery on December 11. The procedure was necessitated by a tear in her retina caused by an accidental injury from her 3-year-old son Charley.
Initially, Guthrie’s medical team attempted to address the tear with less invasive laser surgery. However, it became apparent that retinal surgery was the only viable option, despite its demanding recovery requirements. The procedure involves extended periods with the head facedown, a regimen Guthrie has been adhering to, even utilizing a massage chair for comfort.
Reflecting on her recovery, Guthrie described it as uniquely challenging, with discomfort arising from prolonged periods in a facedown position. However, she has made notable progress, transitioning from constant facedown positioning to alternating between that and sitting up throughout the day.
Looking ahead, Guthrie expressed hope to return to her hosting duties on Today soon. Nonetheless, she acknowledged the visible effects of her surgery, jokingly remarking that her appearance might startle viewers. Despite the physical challenges, Guthrie’s determination to return to her professional responsibilities underscores her resilience and commitment to her role on the show.
