Renowned cataract surgeon Dr. David F. Chang unveiled an innovative robotic cataract surgery technique at the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ASCRS) conference.
Presented in April 2024, the procedure utilizes ForSight Robotics’ Oryom platform, designed to enhance surgeons’ capabilities and expand access to sight-saving surgery globally.
Dr. Chang showcased his experience performing a complete cataract procedure using the robotic platform during his lecture. He shared a video demonstration of the procedure and discussed the promising future of this groundbreaking technology.
“This is the first time I’m demonstrating a video of performing an entire procedure on an animal eye using robotic arms, all while operating from a workstation 20 ft. away. The robotic arms accurately replicated my hand movements,” Dr. Chang explained.
With AI-based algorithms, robotics, and advanced computer vision, the Oryom platform has successfully conducted numerous full robotic cataract procedures on an animal eye model.
ForSight co-founder, president, and chief medical officer, Dr. Joseph Nathan, expressed excitement about this significant milestone. He stated, “Debuting a cataract procedure of this nature in a public conference forum marks an exciting achievement for us. With the collaboration of esteemed cataract surgeons like Dr. Chang, we aim to revolutionize the landscape of sight-saving eye surgery.”
