Raghav Chadha, a member of the Rajya Sabha and a prominent figure in the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), recently underwent an emergency eye surgery known as vitrectomy in London to address a retinal hole.
Vitrectomy is a critical medical procedure aimed at preventing retinal detachment, a condition marked by the formation of small holes in the retina. If left untreated, these holes can rapidly progress, leading to irreversible damage and severe vision impairment, potentially resulting in blindness.
During vitrectomy surgery, physicians remove the gel-like substance known as vitreous gel from inside the eye, replacing it with a saline solution or, in some cases, a gas bubble. This procedure, as outlined by John Hopkins Medicine, is crucial for addressing various eye conditions such as retinal detachment or damage from diabetes that could otherwise lead to blindness.
The retina, located at the back of the eye, plays a vital role in converting incoming light into electrical signals, while the transparent vitreous gel facilitates the passage of light to reach the retina. Vision impairment can occur when blood, debris, or scar tissue obstructs this light transmission.
Vitrectomy becomes necessary in cases of specific eye issues, including retinal detachment, diabetic retinopathy, vitreous hemorrhage, eye infections, severe eye injuries, or complications following cataract surgery.
Despite its benefits, vitrectomy carries certain risks, including infection, excessive bleeding, lens damage, cataract formation, post-surgery difficulties with eye movement, elevated eye pressure, among others.
Delhi Health Minister Saurabh Bharadwaj disclosed to the media on April 30 about Raghav Chadha’s emergency eye surgery. “Raghav Chadha has undergone a major eye surgery in the UK. It is said that his condition was serious and there was a possibility of blindness. As soon as he gets better, he will come back to India and join us in the election campaigning,” the minister stated.
