After a refreshing swim in the pool, if you find your hair and skin feeling dryer than usual, chlorine in the water might be the culprit.
“Chlorine is essential for pool sanitation, keeping bacteria levels low and ensuring clear water, which is crucial for swimmers’ health,” explained Dr. Jennifer Lucas, a dermatologist at Cleveland Clinic. “However, its drying effects can be significant, causing both hair and skin to become parched.”
Dr. Lucas also noted that exposure to chlorine can lead to irritant contact dermatitis, a skin rash triggered by dryness.
Chlorine has a similar impact on hair and nails, stripping away natural oils and leaving them more prone to brittleness. Even eyes can experience irritation due to chlorine exposure.
To mitigate these effects, Dr. Lucas recommends a few preventive measures. First, wetting your hair and skin before entering the pool can help reduce the absorption of chlorine. Using a protective hair mask or leave-in conditioner is another effective strategy.
For added protection, consider wearing swimming caps and goggles. After swimming, promptly showering with a gentle cleanser is crucial to remove chlorine residue from the skin.
“Moisturizing immediately after showering is vital,” Dr. Lucas emphasized. “Replenishing the natural oils with products containing ceramides or alpha-hydroxy acids can help minimize irritation and dryness.”
Furthermore, applying sunscreen before swimming not only protects against sun exposure but also acts as a barrier, helping to retain moisture and shield the skin from chlorine’s effects.
By adopting these practices, swimmers can enjoy their time in the pool while safeguarding their hair and skin health against the drying effects of chlorine.
