The Liberal Democrats have called on the Government to eliminate VAT on high-factor sun cream as part of a broader strategy to address rising skin cancer rates. The party argues that removing VAT from these protective sunscreens would lower their cost, potentially increasing their usage among the public.
In addition to this proposed VAT reduction, the Liberal Democrats are advocating for a comprehensive plan to reduce cancer treatment waiting times. This plan includes increasing the number of cancer nurses to expedite care.
Recent data from 49 NHS hospital trusts revealed that many patients are experiencing delays beyond the 62-day standard for starting skin cancer treatment. For instance, a patient at Norwich and Norfolk NHS Trust faced a 345-day wait after an urgent referral.
Daisy Cooper, the Liberal Democrats’ deputy leader and health spokesperson, criticized the current state of cancer services in the UK as “shocking and tragic.” She emphasized the urgency of the issue, stating, “We are seeing people up and down the country left waiting far too long for the care they need.”
Cooper highlighted the recent hot weather as a reminder of the importance of skin cancer prevention. She argued for making high-factor sunscreen more affordable by cutting VAT and urged major retailers to pass on these savings to consumers.
“The staggering increase in referrals shows we must do more to prevent people from getting skin cancer in the first place,” Cooper added. “The Liberal Democrats have put forward a comprehensive plan to tackle the crisis in cancer care.”
