Scott Thorson, known for his tumultuous relationship with entertainer Liberace, died of cancer and heart disease at a Los Angeles hospital on August 16. Thorson, who met Liberace in 1976 at the age of 18, initially served as the pianist’s assistant, but their relationship soon became romantic, according to Thorson. He later claimed that Liberace encouraged him to undergo plastic surgery to resemble him and struggled with drug addiction as a result.
The relationship ended after five years, leading Thorson to sue Liberace for $113 million. The high-profile case drew media attention, especially as Liberace publicly denied the nature of their relationship. The lawsuit was settled out of court for $75,000 and three pets valued at $20,000.
Following Liberace’s death in 1987 from AIDS complications, Thorson published his memoir, Behind the Candelabra, detailing their relationship, which was later adapted into a 2013 film starring Matt Damon and Michael Douglas. Thorson faced ongoing struggles with addiction and legal issues, including involvement in a 1989 high-profile murder case and multiple prison sentences for drug-related offenses.
