Health Secretary Mark Drakeford has unveiled a substantial £7.7 million investment in the Welsh Centre for Burns and Plastic Surgery, marking a significant milestone as the facility celebrates its 30th anniversary.
The funding will support a comprehensive upgrade at the centre located within Morriston Hospital, Swansea. Serving a vast area that extends from Aberystwyth to Oxford, the centre provides crucial treatment for a population of approximately 10 million people. It specializes in caring for over 1,000 patients annually, including a substantial number of children, many of whom suffer from severe burns.
The planned improvements include the creation of three specialized burns cubicles and two general intensive care cubicles in the main intensive care unit. Additionally, an existing theatre will be converted to accommodate an increased number of burns patients. These specialized burns cubicles are essential for maintaining controlled temperatures and minimizing infection risks.
In his announcement, Drakeford emphasized the centre’s longstanding reputation as one of Europe’s premier burns services. “For the last 30 years, the Welsh Centre for Burns and Plastic Surgery has built a reputation for excellence, providing top-tier care to thousands. This funding will ensure that the centre continues to offer exceptional patient outcomes and attract skilled professionals,” he stated.
The centre, which also handles over 6,500 plastic surgery cases annually involving trauma, infection, and cancer, will benefit significantly from this investment. Consultant plastic surgeon Dean Boyce highlighted the importance of this development, noting that it will enhance care for critically ill burns patients and maintain Swansea’s status as a leading burns care facility in the UK.
“This investment is pivotal in ensuring that our most critical burns patients receive the best possible care,” said Boyce. “Swansea’s standing as an outstanding burns centre will be reinforced through these upgrades.”
