A recent study presented at the NUTRITION 2024 conference suggests that baby carrots may offer more than just improved vision; they could significantly enhance skin health. Conducted by Mary Harper Simmons from Samford University, the research indicates that regular consumption of baby carrots can boost skin carotenoid levels, which are associated with increased antioxidant protection and a stronger immune system.
According to the study, young adults who ate baby carrots at least three times a week experienced higher levels of skin carotenoids. This increase in carotenoids can potentially reduce chronic disease risks and bolster overall skin health. The study found that participants who consumed baby carrots regularly showed a 10 percent rise in skin carotenoid levels. When combined with a daily multivitamin, this boost rose to 21 percent.
Simmons, a Master of Science in Nutrition student and the study’s lead author, highlighted that while previous research has emphasized a daily intake of fruits and vegetables for healthy skin, incorporating baby carrots into one’s diet can provide a more effective solution. The study also noted that while multivitamins containing beta-carotene were less effective, the natural plant nutrients in baby carrots played a crucial role in improving skin health.
