Rosie O’Donnell, the renowned comedian and actress, has recently disclosed a health scare involving basal cell carcinoma (BCC), a common yet serious form of skin cancer. Known for her roles in “A League of Their Own” and her eponymous talk show, O’Donnell shared her diagnosis with fans via social media this week.
In a candid Instagram post, O’Donnell, 62, showed a photo of a suspicious bump near her eye, which she had previously sought medical attention for after it began to scab. She captioned the post, “Had this bump near my eye – went to the dermatologist when it started to scab – #basalcell skin cancer. All removed and fine – get checked #skinhealth.”
Before this update, O’Donnell had posted a selfie featuring two bandages on the same area of her face, prompting supportive comments from her followers. One fan expressed concern and noted the generational lack of sunscreen use, while another humorously referenced the common occurrence of BCC among people with fair skin.
This is not O’Donnell’s first encounter with cancer. Over a decade ago, she faced a breast cancer scare but was declared “cancer-free” after a biopsy. She documented her experience in a blog post titled “Cancer Free,” written in haiku form, which conveyed her relief and gratitude.
O’Donnell had previously shared her family history of breast cancer and her own health struggles, including a heart attack in 2012. Reflecting on her health journey, she acknowledged how it has made her more attuned to her body and its needs.
Basal cell carcinoma, the type of cancer O’Donnell was diagnosed with, is the most prevalent form of skin cancer. It arises from abnormal growth of basal cells in the skin’s top layer. Though BCC typically grows slowly and is highly treatable when detected early, it can become disfiguring and dangerous if left untreated. In the U.S., approximately 3.6 million cases are diagnosed annually.
