In an era where social media bombards us with an endless array of skincare products and gimmicks, the beauty industry finds itself at a crossroads. With an influx of advanced skincare routines being adopted by increasingly younger users, finding a balanced and effective approach to skincare has become more challenging.
Dr. Anjali Mahto, a consultant dermatologist, recently visited Dublin to promote Eucerin’s new Hyaluron-Filler Epigenetic Serum. During her appearance, she discussed the importance of adapting skincare routines to age-related changes while maintaining simplicity and sustainability.
Mahto expressed concern over the growing trend of preteens using potent active ingredients like retinol. She criticized the notion that we can completely halt the aging process, emphasizing that aging should be viewed as a privilege. “Aging is a privilege,” she stated. “We just want to age as well as we can.”
Mahto advised starting with a fundamental skincare routine. In the morning, she recommended cleansing thoroughly, applying a vitamin C or antioxidant serum, and following up with a moisturiser and sunscreen. For evening care, she stressed the importance of cleansing to remove accumulated dirt, sweat, and pollutants, and suggested using a serum that aids in skin repair, such as those containing vitamin A, epigenetic elements, or peptides. If dryness is an issue, applying a moisturiser after the serum is advisable.
As skin changes with age, particularly around menopause when women can lose up to 30% of dermal collagen in the first five years, Mahto highlighted the significance of preventative measures. She pointed out that collagen breakdown is often exacerbated by external factors, particularly UV exposure, making sunscreen essential.
Diet also plays a crucial role in skin health. Mahto advised maintaining a balanced diet rich in healthy fats, selenium, zinc, vitamin C, vitamin D, iron, and protein, while moderating alcohol intake, prioritising sleep, and managing stress.
For advanced skincare, Mahto recommended starting with foundational treatments like vitamin A and retinoids, and considering more intensive options such as laser therapy and microneedling as needed.
Addressing misconceptions about skincare for darker skin tones, Mahto clarified that sunscreen is crucial for all skin types. Beyond preventing sunburn and reducing skin cancer risk, sunscreen helps combat premature aging and pigmentation issues prevalent in darker skin.
Concluding her remarks, Mahto cautioned against the overuse of advanced skincare products by younger individuals. She stressed the importance of using suitable products for youthful skin to avoid disrupting the skin’s barrier function, which can lead to long-term problems. “It’s crucial for both parents and brands to take responsibility for these practices,” Mahto concluded.
