Groundbreaking research from the University of Auckland has unveiled how artificial intelligence (AI) can transform routine eye exams into early detection tools for chronic conditions like diabetes and heart disease. Ehsan Vaghefi, an associate professor of Medical Imaging and AI in Optometry and Ophthalmology, and Dr. David Squirrell founded Toku in 2019 to capitalize on this innovation.
Toku employs AI to analyze eye exam scans for early signs of chronic kidney and cardiovascular diseases, which are among the leading global causes of death. The technology is already in use across thousands of clinics in the US, the UAE, Australia, and New Zealand. Toku was recently named a finalist in the KiwiNet Research Commercialisation Awards.
Vaghefi discusses his personal motivations for pursuing optometry and provides insight into how the technology operates.
