A new MGM+ docuseries, The Wonderland Massacre & The Secret History of Hollywood, sheds light on a surprising connection between Michael Jackson and Hollywood’s seedy underbelly, particularly concerning his cosmetic surgeries. Premiering on September 8, the series delves into the notorious 1981 Wonderland murders and uncovers a remarkable link involving Jackson, pianist Liberace, and the surgeon behind Jackson’s first nose job.
The docuseries features revelations from Scott Thorson, the late former lover of Liberace and a key witness in the Wonderland Gang case. Thorson alleges that he introduced Jackson to Dr. Jack Startz, the physician who performed Jackson’s initial rhinoplasty.
Thorson describes meeting Jackson in the 1980s through Liberace, during a period when both men were undergoing cosmetic procedures. Thorson recalls, “Michael decided to have his nose done. I was having my chin and nose done… we had it on the same day.”
Thorson also claims that Dr. Startz was under the influence during these surgeries, stating, “The doctor came up, and he was drunk when he was shooting Liberace full of Demerol. I had to take the needle away from him.” He reflects on his role with a sense of guilt, stating, “I almost feel kind of guilty about Michael having his nose job because I introduced him to the doctor… That’s what started the plastic surgery.”
Michael Jackson, who passed away in 2009, went on to have numerous cosmetic procedures throughout his life. The docuseries highlights this critical and controversial intersection between Jackson’s personal choices and the darker aspects of Hollywood’s history.
