Recent research from Optical Express reveals concerning trends in eye health among UK adults, indicating that the average individual has not undergone an eye test in over three years. Alarmingly, one in ten adults has gone more than a decade without this crucial assessment.
Stephen Hannan, Clinical Service Director at Optical Express, emphasized the importance of regular eye care, likening optometrists to general practitioners for eye health. He noted that many optometrists now possess independent prescribing rights, enabling them to address a wide range of eye conditions effectively.
In response to the study’s findings, Hannan provided five essential do’s and don’ts for maintaining optimal eye health. Among the recommendations are scheduling regular eye exams and wearing sunglasses that offer UVA protection. He also highlighted the “20-20-20 rule”—a strategy to combat digital eye strain—which advises individuals to look at something 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds after every 20 minutes of screen time.
Additional do’s include maintaining a balanced diet to support eye health and staying hydrated to prevent dry eye symptoms.
Conversely, Hannan urged individuals to avoid several harmful habits, including neglecting eye pain or discomfort, smoking, excessive screen time, sharing eye makeup or contact lenses, and forgetting to wear protective eyewear.
As eye health continues to be overlooked, these guidelines serve as a crucial reminder for UK adults to prioritize regular eye examinations and adopt healthier practices.
