A recent study in the journal Nutrients investigated the effects of a polyphenol-rich cranberry beverage on skin health, lipids, and the microbiome among women. Skin aging results from intrinsic factors like oxidative stress and external influences such as pollution. The findings indicate that cranberry polyphenols significantly improved skin elasticity, particularly in women over 40, suggesting a strong anti-aging potential.
The study involved 24 women aged 25 to 65, divided into two age groups, who consumed either the cranberry beverage or a placebo for six weeks, followed by a washout period. Key assessments included skin elasticity, hydration, and UV-induced erythema. Results showed that participants who drank the cranberry beverage experienced a notable reduction in UV-induced redness and enhanced skin smoothness, especially among older women. Additionally, the beverage positively influenced skin lipid profiles and microbial composition, although it did not significantly affect microbial diversity.
Overall, this research underscores the potential of cranberry polyphenols in promoting skin health, highlighting a need for further studies to explore their long-term benefits across diverse populations.
