Defence Secretary John Healey has revealed plans to eliminate over 100 outdated regulations that currently exclude individuals with conditions such as eczema and acne from joining the Armed Forces. This change aims to attract “the brightest and the best” and address a recruitment crisis exacerbated by years of Conservative leadership, during which recruitment targets were consistently missed. Speaking at the Labour Party conference, Healey emphasized the importance of streamlining the application process to reduce delays and enhance recruitment, particularly for cyber defense roles amid growing digital threats.
He also highlighted Labour’s commitment to support service members through the largest pay rise in two decades while addressing systemic issues in recruitment and retention. Current statistics show that of the 183,130 personnel in the Armed Forces, only 10,680 joined last year, with medical disqualifications playing a significant role in applicant rejections.
